James G. Abourezk Papers, 1970-1983
The Abourezk Papers consist of correspondence, speeches, photographs, news releases, administrative files, and additional items relating to Abourezk's terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate from 1971-1973. Also included in the collection are materials relating to the Occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973, which are compiled into the Wounded Knee, 1973 Series.
Ralph H. Case Papers, 1922-1957
The materials relate to the prosecution of the Black Hills Claim, involving the Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock, Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Fort Peck and Santee Reservations. Additional items relate to smaller claims, including the Lower Brule land claim, Sioux pony claims and the Oahe Dam claim. The collection consists of correspondence, legal papers, legislative bills, newspaper clippings and other printed materials.
Joseph J. Foss Papers, 1955-1959
Foss was born on a farm outside of Sioux Falls, South Dakota on April 17, 1915. He received a degree from the University of South Dakota in 1940. Following his return to South Dakota, Foss served as a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives in 1949 and 1953. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscript and print materials relating to Foss' term as South Dakota governor from 1955-1959.
Carl Blythe Hoy Papers, 1893-1973
Carl “Rube” Blythe Hoy was born on October 17, 1893 in Spink County, South Dakota. He had planned to stay in school until the football season was over but he soon discovered that he enjoyed other sports such as basketball and track. He graduated from USD in 1919 with a degree in Business Administration and Law. Hoy was offered the position of head basketball coach at USD in 1927, serving in that position until 1953. He was also head track coach from 1941-1946 and USD athletic director from 1934-1959. In 1956, Hoy had his own weekly radio program “According to Hoy.” The University of South Dakota published his memoir According to Hoy: Memoirs of an Athletic Director in 1960. Carl Blythe Hoy died on November 4, 1973.
Lloyd Roosevelt Moses Papers, 1904-2000
Lloyd Roosevelt Moses was born on September 4, 1904 to James H. Moses and Alice O. Shelden in Fairfax, South Dakota. Moses served in the Army Reserves until 1940. One of his tours of duty included working with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He worked on the European theater staff and was included in the airborne assault over the Rhine. At the end of World War II (1939-1945), he became post commander at Sendai, Japan. He retired from the Army as a Major General in 1964 and settled in Vermillion, South Dakota
Peter Norbeck Papers, 1900-1936
Dakota Territory, now South Dakota, was the birthplace of Peter Norbeck on 27 August 1870. Elected to the State Senate, he stated in office until 1915; he won the election for governor in 1917. From his office as governor, Norbeck campaigned for and won a seat in the United States Senate in 1920, where he served until his death on 20 December 1936. Norbeck participated in the development in the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Badlands National Park and Custer State Park in South Dakota. The Norbeck Papers consist chiefly of correspondence, manuscript and print materials relating to Norbeck's political service as governor of South Dakota and United States Senator.
Mamie Pyle Shields Papers, 1911-1940
The Mamie Shields Pyle Papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings and miscellaneous printed material extending from 1910-1919. The bulk of the papers document the campaign activities of the South Dakota Universal Franchise League. The League, organized in 1911, succeeded in its campaign with the passage of the suffrage amendment to the state constitution in November 1918. The correspondence also contains materials pertaining to the Woman's Committee of Council of National Defense, South Dakota Division.
Wounded Knee Survivors Association Papers, 1890-1973
The Wounded Knee Survivors Association members are “descendents and relatives of the Sioux Indians that were involved or killed in the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890.” The Association originated shortly after the 1890 massacre, when survivors began to ask for compensation. Dewey Beard and Joseph Horn Cloud were two of the organization’s founding members. Currently, the Association is an independent organization whose goals include preserving and protecting the massacre site from exploitation and administering any memorial erected at Wounded Knee.

One of the largest series in the USD Archives is the papers of the President’s Office. Among those represented are: Garrett Droppers, 1899-1906; Benjamin Gault, 1906-1913; Robert Slagle, 1914-1928; Herman James, 1929-1934; I. D. Weeks, 1935-1966; Edward Q. Moulton, 1966-1968; Charles D. Lein, 1977-1982; Joseph McFadden, 1982-1988; Betty Turner Asher, 1989-1996; James Abbott, 1997-2000.
