Jeanne Smith Collections, 1800-1975.

Two collections of research materials garnered from other archives in this region. The subjects covered relate to the history, genealogy (white/Indians inter- marrying), and government of the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Lakota people.

Black Hills Treaty Video Collection, 1979-present.

U-matic, VHS and digital videos of meetings, rallies and interviews regarding the effort to reclaim Lakota sovereignty over the Black Hills.

Matthew King Audio Collection, 1959-1981.

Reel-to-reel audio recordings of traditional spiritual, ceremonial and social songs, recorded by Matthew King on or around the Pine Ridge Reservation. Some reels have been copied to cassette. Restricted use.

Porcupine Boss Farmer Collection, 1915-1932.

Correspondence, individual records, purchase orders, and other business records from a boss farmer in Porcupine, SD.

VIP Photograph Collection, ca. 1900-1945.

Historical photographs collected from repositories around the world in the early 1980s in an effort to locally identify Lakota persons depicted therein. Photographs show various aspects of life on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the first half of the 20th Century.

American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Records, 1970-1990.

Administrative records which document the first twenty years of AIHEC’s existence. AIHEC and its tribal college members have played a pivotal role in providing higher education to Native Americans since 1970.

Iron Tail Collection, 1883-1916.

Photos, lantern slides, artifacts and manuscripts regarding the Oglala man who took part in the Indian wars of the 1860s and 1870s, performed in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, and became famous for being the model for the Indian head nickel.

Enos Poor Bear Collection, ca. 1961-1984.

Correspondence, news clippings, photographs and certificates from a past Oglala Sioux Tribal Chairman (1964-6; 1968-70).

Jim Iron Cloud Collection, ca. 1907-1983.

Correspondence, land allotments, articles, diaries, prayer books, ledgers and photographs from a past Oglala Sioux Tribal Chairman (1956-7).

Oglala Lakota Legal Rights Fund Audio Collection, 1980-1982.

Reel-to-reel recordings of interviews by Anita Parlow for the book she edited, A Song From Sacred Mountain, published in 1983 by the Oglala Lakota Legal Rights Fund. Features prominent members of the Oglala, Rosebud, Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux Tribes, as well as Northern and Southern Cheyenne. Interviews concern the spiritual and cultural significance of Bear Butte and the Black Hills, and the continuing struggle with the government over them. Tapes are currently restricted but will be accessible soon.
